Anyone thinking about buying a houseboat in the Netherlands usually thinks of small boats lined up close together on the canals. Although they have a certain visual charm, they are usually very cramped and simply furnished.

New trend: buying a floating house in the Netherlands

Houseboats have a long tradition in the Netherlands. According to estimates, there are more than 10,000 houseboats on the waters of our neighboring country. This alternative way of living has its origins in the 60s and 70s.

After the Second World War, Holland sold its old boats for little money to private individuals - mainly artists and young people. Instead of converting discarded boats into houseboats, a new trend in Dutch architecture has been gaining ground in recent years: floating houses.

The reason for this is the fact that more than a quarter of the Netherlands is below sea level, which leads to an increased risk of flooding. There are now entire districts built with floating houses. In Amsterdam's Waterbuurt West district, for example, an unused old shipyard site has been converted into a district of water houses. Here you can find houseboats for sale in Amsterdam every now and then.

There is also another settlement of floating houses in Maasbommel near Arnhem. The plan for this project was drawn up back in 1995, when 65,000 people had to leave their homes due to flooding.

There are now 40 floating houses here, which were not built below sea level but on it and which adapt to rising water levels thanks to their floating subsoil.
